Magnitude 6.4 earthquake strikes the Gulf of California

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit the Gulf of California on Sunday.

Mexico’s Office of Civil Defense confirmed there were no immediate reports of damage in areas where the quake was felt, but recommended boaters and nearby coastal residents take precautions due to possible currents in ports, Reuters reported.

MSC said the quake occurred at a depth of 10 km.

Shortly after the earthquake, the United States Tsunami Warning System said there was no danger of a tsunami on the West Coast of the United States, British Columbia, or Alaska.

Mexico’s civil defense office later said via Twitter that slight sea level differences, of up to a few centimeters, might be detected in the area where the quake occurred.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) assigned the earthquake a magnitude of 6.3.
