New York, July 8 (BNA): The Kingdom of Bahrain urged concerted international efforts to protect children, spare them the scourge of conflicts around the world, and support their rehabilitation and integration.
Bahrain’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Fares Al-Roai, expressed the position during the plenary session of the UN Security Council on children and armed conflict.
In his speech before the session, he affirmed Bahrain’s commitment to implementing initiatives and enacting legislation aimed at protecting children and promoting their rights.
The Kingdom of Bahrain acceded to the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991, and acceded to the Optional Protocol on the involvement of children in armed conflict and the Optional Protocol on the sale and exploitation of children.
Ambassador Al-Ruwaie praised the report of the United Nations Secretary-General on Children and Armed Conflict, in which he welcomed the cooperation of the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict.
He pointed to the increase in conflicts and the multiplication of the number of armed elements, which indicates the seriousness of the hostilities that are sweeping new areas, which exacerbates the horrific violations committed against children, such as killing, maiming, kidnapping, recruitment and other heinous crimes.
Ambassador Al-Roai denounced the increase in attacks targeting even schools, hospitals and infrastructure in conflict areas, and urged all warring parties to adhere to agreements and humanitarian law that stipulated respect and implementation of international treaties related to children’s rights, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child. He stressed the importance of all conflicting parties ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches children, their families and those who take care of them, and provides them with health care, education and protection.
