Torrential rain, floods kill 22 across northern India

Today, Monday, local authorities and media said that the torrential rains that swept across northern India killed at least 22 people and also triggered landslides and flash floods in the region.

Schools in New Delhi were closed after heavy rains lashed the national capital over the weekend, and authorities in the Himalayan states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand told people not to go outside unless necessary.

At least 22 people died in floods and landslides in the northern states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab on Sunday, The Times of India reported.

In the northern state of Himachal Pradesh, flash floods over the weekend caused a bridge to collapse and many bungalows were swept away.

Authorities used helicopters to rescue people who were stranded on roads and bridges due to the rain.

Streets were flooded across northern states, including Punjab, Delhi and Uttarakhand. In some areas, rescue personnel used rubber rafts to rescue people who were stranded inside their homes.
