Canada held to a 0-0 draw by Nigeria in Women’s World Cup opener for both teams

Melbourne, July 21 (BNA): Olympic champions Canada were held 0-0 with Nigeria in the opening match of the Women’s World Cup after Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nadozi made several crucial saves, including a penalty kick from Christine Sinclair.

It was a decisive loss for the Canadian veteran, who is the all-time leading scorer in international soccer, men’s and women’s, with 190 goals, according to the Associated Press.

Sinclair lined up to shoot in the 50th minute. Nnadozie jumped left to save. She pointed to her head after blocking the kick.

Canada moves to Perth on Australia’s west coast for their next match against Ireland, which they will lose 1-0 to the Australians in their Group B opener.

Nigeria will play the host team in Brisbane on Thursday. Australian star striker Sam Kerr missed the win against Ireland with a calf muscle injury that is also expected to keep them sidelined for the match against Nigeria.
