Oslo, July 11 (BNA) A volcano erupted on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwest Iceland, near the capital, Reykjavík, following intense earthquake activity in the area, according to the country’s meteorological office.
“Right now, it’s a very small explosion,” said Matthew Roberts of IMO’s services and research division. He added that there is no immediate and imminent danger to people in the area.
The airport said on its website that traffic at Keflavik International Airport in Reykjavik was not disrupted.
Images and live broadcasts by local news outlets MBL and RUV showed lava and smoke billowing from a fissure in the ground on the side of Fagradalsfjall mountain.
The Reykjanes Peninsula is a volcanic and seismic hot spot southwest of the capital, Reykjavík. In March 2021, lava fountains spectacularly erupted from a 500-750m fissure in the ground in the Fagradalsfjall volcanic system.
