North Korea fires several cruise missiles into Yellow Sea

Seoul, July 22 (BNA): The Joint Chiefs of Staff said that North Korea launched several cruise missiles into the Yellow Sea today, Saturday.

South Korean and US intelligence authorities have been analyzing the launches, which took place around 4:00 a.m., to learn more about the type of missiles launched and other details, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“Our military has enhanced surveillance and vigilance while cooperating closely with the United States and maintaining a resolute state of readiness,” the Joint Chiefs of Staff said, adding that it is closely monitoring additional North Korean activities.

According to Yonhap, the launches came three days after North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea.

It also came amid heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula following the port visit of a nuclear-capable US submarine more than 40 years ago and the inaugural session of the South Korea-US Nuclear Advisory Group earlier this week.

The USS Kentucky (SSBN 737), an 18,750-ton Ohio-class nuclear ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), left Pusan ​​Naval Base on Friday, three days after a rare port visit in a major show of force against North Korea’s evolving military threats.

North Korea denounced the visit, saying that publishing the SSBN might fall under the legal terms of its use of nuclear weapons.

In March, North Korea said it launched strategic cruise missiles “equipped with an experimental warhead simulating a nuclear warhead”.

At the time, North Korean state media said that two “Hwasal-1” and two “Hwasal-2” strategic missiles, launched in South Hamgyong Province, accurately hit specific targets in the East Sea.
