iGA Chief launches Beta Version of revamped Bahrain Open Data Portal

Manama, June 14 (BNA): Under the follow-up and directives of His Excellency Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Interior, Chairman of the Ministerial Committee for Information and Communication Technology, and Chairman of the Information and e-Government Authority. Executive Director Mohammed Ali Al Qaed announced the launch of the beta version of the Bahrain Open Data Portal (data.gov.bh).


Al Qaed said that this project is in line with the goal of the Information and eGovernment Authority to support the economic recovery plan in Bahrain and the government program (2023-2026) through the continuous enhancement of the readiness and capacity of the platform.


In addition, he stressed the importance of providing the platform with advanced and innovative features that ensure all beneficiaries have access to accurate and reliable government data and indicators related to the main sectors in the Kingdom.


Al-Qaed indicated that the development of the open data portal was implemented to comply with international best practices as well as the United Nations standards for open data.


He added that the Information and eGovernment Authority is currently working on developing and enhancing several features that will soon be launched in the initial experimental platform, taking into account standards to ensure the availability of data from the largest number of government agencies. Free and available/accessible to all in a readable and downloadable format.


Al-Qaed said that the beta version of the Bahraini open data platform will provide an integrated and open data set from government agencies, which in turn will enhance levels of transparency, and encourage electronic participation and innovation.

By publishing open data provided by ministries and government agencies, as well as publicly sharing geographic information system (GIS) data on the platform, decision makers, investors, researchers, and citizens will be able to use it in research studies, service development, and investment projects, among many other uses.


He called on researchers from the public and private sectors and academics in the Kingdom, as well as anyone with interest, to explore the beta version of the open data platform in Bahrain and provide the Information and eGovernment Authority with notes and suggestions through various communication channels. It emphasized that all public users were essential partners in the development process.


Open data refers to data that anyone can use without any technical, financial or legal restrictions. It may also be used and reused for commercial or non-commercial purposes, subject to the requirements of the open data license, under which this data is distributed.
