SAN DIEGO July 8 (BNA): Jeff McNeil doubled at Starling Mart with a go-ahead home run on the first pitch of the 10th inning, and the New York Mets extended their winning streak to a season-high six games with a win over San Diego. Padres 7-5 Friday night in a game between high-priced and underperforming teams.
McNeil hitter off rookie Tom Cosgrove (1-2) went inside the line after first baseman Jake Cronworth’s dive and into right field to bring up Mart, the robot runner. Francisco Alvarez followed with his fourth consecutive single to score McNeil, the 2022 NRL champion.
According to the Associated Press (AP), the Mets added a two-run single to Francisco Lindor, who had three hits and three RBIs as he followed up with his first career five-hit game the night before.
Lindor hit off U Darvish in the third to make it 3-2 for the Mets. It was his nineteenth day. The third single by Daniel Vogelbach of Darwish tied the score at 3 in fifth. He also had an RBI single in first.
The Mets had the bases loaded with one out in the ninth before Nick Martinez jumped Marte into a 1-2-3 double play.
“This was a huge victory for us,” McNeil said. “We fought it, we fought all night and we felt good about it. They’re playing well, we’re playing well, close in order. We need to keep playing good baseball. We’re doing it right now. We need to keep that up, finish Strong first half and take advantage of that momentum in the second half.”
Drew Smith (4-3) pitched the ninth to win.
Manny Machado hit a pair of racing piles in 10th, finishing 13th.
The Padres fell to 0-8 in overtime games. They were coming off their first three-game sweep of the season, against two-way All-Star Shuhei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels.
The teams came in with a 41-46 record and were buried in fourth place in their divisions. The Mets have the biggest salaries in baseball at around $360 million, while the Padres are third at around $250 million.
The Padres had World Series aspirations after reaching the NL Championship Series. Along the way, they’ve racked up 101 Wild Card Series wins and 111 Los Angeles Dodgers wins in the NLDS. They signed Xander Bogaerts to an $280 million, 11-year contract and welcomed back Fernando Tatis Jr. from 80-game doping, but struggled offensively.
The Mets went on an amazing spending spree under owner Steve Cohen, but their luck ran into trouble after losing Edwin Diaz in the preseason to a knee injury.
The Padres took a 2-1 lead in the first when Machado hit an RBI double on Justin Verlander with two out and then hit a home run on third baseman Luis Gillorm’s error. Guillorme made an impressive jump to lead off Gary Sanchez’s line in the sixth.
Trent Gresham’s RBI double in the second gave San Diego a 3–1 lead.
Darvish, who had been sidelined for just over two weeks from illness, allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings.
Verlander, making just his third career start against the Padres, gave up three runs, two earned runs, and five hits in six innings pitched.
The Mets were coming off a 9-0 laugh in Arizona.
“I think we need to start going a little bit further,” Verlander said. “Some games are like yesterday’s games and some are like today. You can have some games your way. It seems like a lot of things didn’t go our way, so it’s nice to see that change up a bit.”

Padres: 2B Ha-Seong Kim replaced by Roughned Odor in the opening of the ninth. Kim jammed his right toe kicking a water cooler in frustration after he was thrown out trying to extend a double-to-triple with the score tied in the seventh. Then Juan Soto doubled but Fernando Tatis Jr. flew out to end the inning.
