Merkel awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit

Berlin, June 22 (BNA): Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel received the Bavarian Order of Merit in Munich on Wednesday for her years of service.

“When you’ve been chancellor for 16 years, 5,860 days – they wrote that to me – to have survived and lived this alone is quite an achievement,” Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder said during the awards ceremony, according to the dpa news agency. ).

Soder said that Merkel had demonstrated during her time in office that she had the courage and moral compass to make tough decisions.

He said this was the case with the financial crisis, with the phase-out of nuclear power and later with the immigration crisis.

Söder, who personally thanked Merkel for her advice during this time, said that during the coronavirus pandemic, Merkel has always been on duty, especially in Bavaria, which has been particularly affected and thus helped save lives.

Bavaria has particularly benefited from Merkel’s tenure in government.

“My point is simply to thank you,” Sodder said.

The Order of Merit has been awarded since 1957 as a “mark of honor and appreciation” for distinguished services to the people and state of Bavaria.

The number of living recipients who are able to receive the Bavarian Prize is limited to 2,000.
