Bahrain’s efforts to achieve food security highlighted at global parliamentary summit

Manama, June 17 (BNA): Dr. Jihad Abdullah Al-Fadhel, Second Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council, affirmed that the Kingdom of Bahrain, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, attaches great importance to food security in the national agenda by instilling a strategic framework for food production at the national level.

Al-Fadil made these statements while actually participating in the Global Parliamentary Summit to Combat Hunger and Malnutrition.

The summit aims to exchange skills between parliamentarians in implementing legislation related to matters related to food security, discussing priorities to address challenges related to hunger and malnutrition, building relationships between parliamentarians and parliaments, as well as supporting parliamentary efforts to develop a strong, coherent and valid system. A comprehensive legal policy framework to promote food security and nutrition more broadly.

She indicated that achieving food security requires an integrated approach based on cooperation between all stakeholders in the international system, as combating hunger and malnutrition requires collective solutions formulated by states, parliaments and relevant international institutions.

Dr. Al-Fadil stressed the need to stimulate global collective action in achieving the sustainable development goals of eliminating hunger and malnutrition by 2030, which is important given the multiple challenges and crises that have negatively affected all dimensions related to food security.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and other relevant organizations recommended encouraging investment funds to launch investment projects in the areas of food security and linking them to international efforts so that we can move to a greener economy due to climate change.

Dr. Al-Fadil stressed the importance of establishing a legislative structure that enhances food security to ensure the localization of advanced technology for smart agriculture and securing the appropriate needs of fish and livestock in addition to water resources.

And she stressed the importance of involving all participants, led by parliaments, in this process, to establish permanent multilateral mechanisms for the global food crisis, and to find unified partnerships among all geopolitical groups in the international food crisis system to pave the way for achieving the international food crisis. Solidarity in the face of the global food crisis.

Regarding legislative-executive coordination in Bahrain, Al-Fadhel explained that the legislative authority agreed to support government initiatives that contributed to Bahrain’s ranking 38th in the global food security index for the year 2022, stressing that there is an ambitious plan to move to the state. Twenty-fifth place in the world by 2030. She indicated that the two branches also agreed to develop national capabilities in the food industry, build an infrastructure that simulates future goals, and provide incentives and facilities to attract the private sector to invest in food security.

A national company was also established under the name of the Bahrain Agricultural Development Company, which includes all food security projects, fish farming and agricultural projects in various fields in all governorates of Bahrain.

Al-Fadhel explained that the Shura Council submitted a number of proposals for laws that would contribute to the sustainability of food, in addition to a number of initiatives through other parliamentary platforms, such as proposals to establish an Arab center for food security and launch an Arab project.
