Djokovic reached the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam tournament for the 56th time in his career, second only to Roger Federer’s men’s record of 58. He will face Andrey Rublev in the semifinals.
Andreeva, a Russian qualifier who is still only 16 years old, has been showing her maturity throughout the first week of Wimbledon, but things went well on Monday. The teen won all six of her matches on grass to reach the fourth round at the All England Club but left a huge lead over 25th seed Madison Keys in a 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-2 loss at No. 2 Court.
Andreeva took the first set and took a 3-0 lead for his second win of nine out of 10 matches in one period before Keys turned things around. Frustrated at one point, Andreeva threw down her racket and received a warning from Swedish presidential governor Louise Azmar Engzel. In the last game, Andreeva slipped while running to catch the ball and the racket fell out of her hand again.
The Russian Engzel anchored a point for a second putter, giving Keys a match point. Andreeva argued on the call, defending her case. However, the call got stuck, and Keys then finished the match to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for the first time since 2015.
Keys has reached the semi-finals at the other three Grand Slam tournaments, including reaching the final at the US Open in 2017, but her only quarter-final appearance at the All England Club ended at that point. Andreeva, the newest tennis player, was the youngest player in the Wimbledon draw. She was trying to become the youngest player to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon since Anna Kournikova in 1997. Keys will next play Aryna Sabalenka, who defeated No. 21 Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 6-0. Sabalenka, seeded second, won the Australian Open this year and has a 16-1 record at the Grand Slam in 2023.
Defending champion Elena Rybakina also reached the quarterfinals. It advanced when Beatriz Haddad Maya retired from their match with a lower back injury with Rybakina taking a 4-1 lead. Also in the men’s tournament, Chris Eubanks reached the quarterfinals in his Wimbledon debut, defeating fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 3-6, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Next time he will meet third seed Daniil Medvedev, who advanced when Jiri Lechka retired from the match against the Russian leader 6-4, 6-2.
