Philippine coast guard rescues 120 people as ferry catches fire

Manila, June 18 (BNA): The Philippine Coast Guard said that 120 people were rescued from a ferry that caught fire in the sea in the central Philippines on Sunday.

The coast guard said the M/V Esperanza Star, which was carrying 65 passengers and 55 officers and crew, caught fire while it was sailing from Siquijor Island in the south to the nearby island of Bohol.

A spokesman for the Coast Guard firefighters aboard another ship said they used water hoses and declared the fire around 0200 GMT. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Two Coast Guard vessels participating in firefighting and rescue operations were still in the water near the fire. The location and conditions of the rescued passengers and crew were not disclosed.
