Newcastle still winless in EPL after 2-0 loss at Arsenal

London, November 27 (BNA) Newcastle’s winless start to the Premier League season extended to 13 games after their 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday.

Bukayo Saka and the player who replaced him, Gabriel Martinelli, scored in the second half to lift last-placed Newcastle, recently under Saudi ownership, for their seventh loss of the season.

Arsenal remain fifth but are now level on points with fourth-placed West Ham as they continue to recover from losing their first three games of the season.

Saka ran a deft pass from left back Nuno Tavares and fired low through goalkeeper Martin Dubravka into the far corner to put Arsenal ahead in the 56th minute.

Saka appeared to hit his left leg shortly after his goal, and after playing for a while, he was substituted by Martinelli in the 64th minute. The 20-year-old Brazilian scored within two minutes.

Martinelli fired in a high pass from right-back Takehiro Tomiyasu over the Newcastle defence, sending a ball past Dubravka with one of the first touches of the ball.

Recently appointed Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was on the sidelines in this match – he was absent from his first club official, the 3-3 draw against Brentford last week, after contracting coronavirus – but his side barely bothered Arsenal’s defence.

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was called in earnestly to block a long-range shot from Jongo Shelvey to the crossbar midway through the first half.

The highlight of the first half saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang somehow failing to score from just 3 metres, and his attempt to rebound hit off the post instead.
