Newcastle holds Premier League leader Arsenal to 0-0 draw

London, January 4 (BNA): Newcastle did not win, but kept Premier League leaders Arsenal without goals in a goalless draw between its title rivals.

Arsenal have scored in every other league game this season en route to what is now an eight-point lead over Manchester City, who play at Chelsea on Thursday, the Associated Press reports.

The draw at the Emirates Stadium allowed both teams to go on unbeaten runs in the league match. Newcastle’s streak has gone up to 13, and Arsenal’s to 11.

Arsenal started strong but faded away and rarely threatened to break through third-placed Newcastle’s defence. The Magpies have the best defensive record in the league, conceding just 11 times.

The match saw few chances but produced eight yellow cards and a brief exchange of words between managers Eddie Howe and Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta.

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope made a great save to deny Eddie Nketiah a late win.

Both teams then play FA Cup matches against Third Division opponents. Arsenal at Oxford United next Monday night. Newcastle will visit Sheffield Wednesday and then host Leicester on Tuesday in the League Cup quarter-finals.
