New Zealand appoints Hipkins to replace Ardern as PM

WELLINGTON Jan. 22 (BNA): New Zealand’s ruling Labor Party has chosen former COVID minister Chris Hepkins to replace Jacinda Ardern as its new party leader, and become the country’s next prime minister.

Hipkins was the only candidate for the job, and his confirmation at a Sunday caucus meeting, known as the Labor Party, was largely a formality.

His appointment to the top job followed the abrupt resignation Thursday by Ardern, who said she “no longer had it in the tank” to lead the country, Reuters reported.

“This is the greatest privilege and greatest responsibility of my life,” Hipkins said at a news conference announcing his appointment. “I am excited and excited about the challenge that lies ahead.”

Ardern’s leadership was immediately recognized by Hipkins, whom he described as one of New Zealand’s greatest Prime Ministers and an inspiration to women and girls everywhere.

“She gave a voice to those who are often overlooked in challenging times, and deliberately pursued politics differently,” said Hipkins.
