Sydney, Dec. 31 (BUS): New coronavirus infections surged again in Australia on Friday to a record high of more than 32,000, just days after it topped 10,000 for the first time, according to the Associated Press.
Experts say the blast was caused by a highly contagious omicron and the recent easing of restrictions in Sydney and other areas.
More than 15,000 new cases have been reported in Sydney. Another 5,000 cases came from elsewhere in New South Wales, while nearly 6,000 cases were confirmed in Victoria, home to Melbourne’s second-largest city.
While hospitalizations and deaths are on the rise, they have not yet reached the comparable levels seen in previous outbreaks. Several cities were planning to go ahead with New Year’s Eve celebrations, including the famous fireworks display from the Sydney Harbor Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.
Authorities were expecting much smaller crowds than in the pre-pandemic years, when up to a million revelers flocked to Sydney.
