New COVID-19 cases amid looming ‘twindemic’ risks

SEOUL, Oct. 30 (BNA): New cases of COVID-19 in South Korea remained below 40,000 for the fourth consecutive day, amid growing fears of a possible outbreak of the COVID-19 “epidemic” and seasonal flu this winter.

The Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said the country reported 34,511 new COVID-19 infections, including 46 from abroad, bringing the total to 25,538,799.

Sunday’s tally is up from 35,924 the day before and nearly 8,000 higher than the previous week.

And the health authorities warned that the daily numbers of infections had crossed a stage and showed signs of a re-emergence.

Concerns are also growing about the risks of simultaneous outbreaks of COVID-19 and seasonal influenza.

Authorities announced earlier in the week that they are expanding booster doses against omicron variants to all adults over the age of 18.

The country added 27 more deaths due to COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 29,158. The death rate was 0.11 percent.

The number of critically ill patients reached 272, an increase of two from the previous day.
