Napoli back on the winning track thanks to Lecce own goal

Rome, April 7 (BNA): Napoli came one step closer to ending their 33-year wait for the Serie A title after they were knocked out of Lecce with a 2-1 win on Friday thanks to a bizarre own goal from a Lecce defender. Antonino Gallo.

Luciano Spalletti’s side have extended their lead at the top of the table to 19 points over second-placed Lazio, who play Juventus on Saturday, Reuters reports.

And Napoli, whose shock 4-0 loss against AC Milan on Sunday was their third league defeat this season, is within striking distance of winning the Serie A title for the first time since 1990 with nine matches remaining.

Napoli opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Giovanni Di Lorenzo headed in a cross from Kim Min-jae.

Lecce equalized seven minutes into the second half after Federico Di Francesco pounced on a loose ball inside the penalty area and sent the ball into the bottom corner.

Lecce’s momentum vanished in the 64th minute when Gallo flicked the ball to goalkeeper Vladimiro Falcon, who saw it seep between his gloves and into the net.

The match capped another miserable week for Lecce, who have so far suffered six consecutive defeats in Serie A and are in 16th place, eight points above the relegation zone.
