Nadal optimistic on Wimbledon after treating pained foot

Madrid, June 17 (BNA) Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal said today, Friday, that he will try to play at Wimbledon after a “week without slalom” thanks to new treatment for his painful left foot.

“My intention is to play Wimbledon,” Nadal said at his home in Mallorca. “If it doesn’t go the way I want it to, we’ll see what happens. (But I’m happy. I went a week without limping.”

After winning his 14th French Open title two weeks ago, Nadal said he was not sure if he could continue playing with severe foot pain. He was only able to finish the Roland Garros match after numbing his foot with analgesic doses, a method the Spaniard said he did not wish to repeat.

The Associated Press (AP) said the slight improvement in the chronic condition that has plagued him for years came after Nadal visited a clinic in Barcelona last week for radiofrequency treatment for painful nerves.

If this latest attempt to make his foot condition more tolerable doesn’t work, the 36-year-old said he would consider surgery, a move he admits could put the continuation of his career into question.

Nadal also spoke about his future as a father for the first time after Spanish media reported this week that his wife, Maria Francesca Perello, was pregnant.

“I don’t know how that will change my life, I don’t have experience (being a father), but I don’t plan to mean a change in my career,” Nadal said.

Wimbledon begins on June 27.

He reached two of Nadal’s record 22 singles titles in the All England Club Championship.
