Municipalities Ministry, UN-Habitat discuss cooperation in afforestation field

Manama, April 2 (BNA): Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Wael bin Nasser Al-Mubarak received a delegation from the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), headed by the Prime Minister. From the UN-Habitat country program in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Dr. Fernanda Lonardoni, and in the presence of a number of international experts in the field of afforestation, to discuss cooperation in areas of common interest.

The minister praised the tireless efforts made by the United Nations Human Settlements Program to support Bahrain’s goals and efforts in the field of sustainable development, which led to many important results in the field of developing cities and caring for heritage and historical sites.

He stressed that the Kingdom pays special attention to the principle of sustainable development, as it is one of the most important pillars of comprehensive development in Bahrain.

He reviewed the plans and projects of the Ministry of Municipalities in the field of sustainable development. He also discussed the ongoing cooperation with the United Nations Human Settlements Program and the FAO, noting that the ministry is seeking to benefit from international expertise in implementing afforestation plans in the Kingdom.

During the meeting, the United Nations Human Settlements Program presented an integrated vision on afforestation in the Kingdom, and revealed plans to hold training courses and workshops for the ministry’s competencies in the field of afforestation.

The members of the delegation expressed their admiration for the Kingdom’s achievements in the field of afforestation and its plans to double the number of trees, which are in line with the goals of the United Nations Habitat in the field of environment and combating climate change.

Dr. Fernanda Lonardoni praised the remarkable progress achieved by the Kingdom at the level of sustainable development, stressing the keenness of the United Nations Human Settlements Program to continue cooperation with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture in various fields and programs.
