Montenegro run-off election on April 2

Podgorica, March 20 (BNA): Veteran Montenegro President Milo Djukanovic will face a run-off on April 2 against a former economy minister, after no candidate secured a 50% majority in the first round of the election, according to one projection. Based on 99.7% of the voting sample.

The Center for Monitoring and Research (CEMI) pollster group predicted Djukanovic would receive the most votes, at 35.3%, based on tabulated results from a statistical sample of votes cast.

Former Economy Minister Jakov Milatović, a pro-European economist and vice-chairman of the centrist Europe Now party, was expected to win with 29.2%, according to Reuters.

Milatović described his result as a “beautiful, better, fair…and European Montenegro” victory.

“We have taken a decisive step towards April 2 and sealed victory,” he said.

The official outcome is unlikely to be revealed for several days pending complaints procedures.

Djukanovic has served as President or Prime Minister for 33 years.

After the vote, he told his supporters that he was satisfied with what he had achieved.

Djukanovic dissolved parliament and held snap legislative elections on 11 June.
