Mexican police rescue 600 migrants from two trucks

Berlin, November 22 (BNA): Mexican security forces rescued 600 migrants from two trucks in the southeast of the country.

The German news agency (dpa) reported that 455 men and 145 women were found in the trailers of two semi-trailers in the state of Veracruz.

According to the report, the people come from 12 different countries, most of them from neighboring Guatemala. But among them are citizens of Honduras, Nicaragua, Cuba, El Salvador, Venezuela, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Bangladesh, India, Ghana and Cameroon.

According to media reports, smugglers crammed migrants into truck trailers on two levels.

A spokesperson for the Veracruz Human Rights Commission said they included pregnant women, children and patients. He said the drivers had been arrested.

The trucks were parked on a road near the coastal city of Coatzacoalcos on Friday, according to reports. The people were initially transferred to a reception centre.

Just a month ago, 334 migrants were rescued from a single truck in Veracruz.

Most of the migrants arrested in Mexico come from Central American countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. There is poverty, violence and corruption. In addition, there are consequences of drought and natural disasters.

Many people from other crisis-stricken countries in the region, such as Haiti, Cuba and Venezuela, recently made the long and dangerous journey through Mexico. Not many of them even reach the US border, but Mexican soldiers stop them and turn them back.
