Meteorological Directorate: May 2023 slightly warmer than normal

Manama, June 8 (BNA): The Meteorological Department of the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications stated in its monthly weather report that the month of May 2023 was slightly warmer than usual, with temperatures above the average wind speed.

The monthly mean temperature was 31.7°C which is 0.6°C higher than the long-term normal for May and this records as the ninth highest mean May temperature since 1902. Note that the highest mean monthly temperature is for May It was 33.5°C recorded. in 2021.

The mean monthly maximum temperature was 35.9°C which is 0.2°C below the long-term normal. Note that the highest mean monthly maximum temperature for May was 38.9°C recorded in 2021.

The highest temperature during the month was 43.6 degrees Celsius, which was recorded on May 13 at Bahrain International Airport, but it recorded 46.0 degrees Celsius on the same day at the Bahrain International Circuit.

The average minimum temperature for the month was 28.3 °C which is 1.1 °C higher than the long-term normal, and this records as the seventh highest average minimum temperature for the month of May since 1946. Note that the highest average monthly minimum temperature for the month of May was 29.1°C. Registered in 2012.

The lowest temperature was 23.1°C on the 7th of May at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 19.8°C on the 6th of May at Durrat Al Bahrain.

The average relative humidity for the month of May was 42% while the average maximum relative humidity was 62% and the average minimum relative humidity was 25%. The highest relative humidity was 79% on May 22 and the lowest relative humidity was 10% on May 13.

Only trace amounts of rain were recorded on the 18th, 19th and 20th of May at Bahrain International Airport. Note that the long-term average total precipitation for the month of May is 0.5 mm and the highest monthly precipitation recorded during the month of May at Bahrain International Airport was 12.7 mm which occurred in 1907.

The total monthly precipitation for May 2022 in Durrat Al Bahrain was 3.8 mm and in Sitra Island 0.2 mm and was recorded on May 20.

The total hours of sunshine for the month were 340.2 hours. Note that the highest total monthly sunshine hours for May were 370.4 hours recorded in 2021.

The average wind speed for May was 9 knots. The prevailing wind was 38% from the northwest direction. Strong winds reached 31 knots on May 2, 14 and 18 at Bahrain International Airport but recorded 32 knots on May 2 and 18 at King Fahd Causeway. East and southeast winds accounted for 19% of the observation. Strong winds reached 31 knots on May 20 at Bahrain International Airport, but recorded 35 knots on the same day at Durrat Al Bahrain.

Dust was reported on May 31. Visibility decreased to 2,500 meters at Bahrain International Airport.
