Met Opera starts streaming of live performances to homes

New York, Oct. 4 (U.S.): Metropolitan Opera is expanding its live broadcast to home broadcasts in regions without cinema broadcasts, including Brazil and Italy.

The Met launched its high-definition television programming to cinemas in December 2006 and plans ten broadcasts each season, AP reports.

The company said the opera will be available to streams in 171 countries and territories beyond the 50 that have access to movie theaters.

The cost will be $10 to $20 per opera, which will be available for replay in a seven-day window. English, Spanish and French subtitles will be available for broadcasts.

About 2,000 movie theaters currently offer television broadcasts, and broadcasts in the United States and Canada will be available through location services and geo-fencing programs to areas not close to movie transmissions.

Home broadcast sales begin October 17 ahead of the first TV broadcast of the season, Cherubini’s “Medea” with Sondra Radvanovsky in Italian subtitles beginning October 22.
