Merseyside police investigate Ronaldo phone incident in United loss

Liverpool, April 11 (BNA): Merseyside police said they are reviewing CCTV footage to determine whether Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo committed an offense by throwing his mobile phone from a fan’s hand after his team’s 1-0 defeat to Everton.

Footage emerged on social media of Ronaldo passing his hand towards the ground as he exited the field and headed into the tunnel at Goodison Park after Saturday’s game, Reuters reported.

Witnesses said the 37-year-old knocked over a fan’s phone and hit the ground, and Ronaldo later took to Instagram to apologize for the incident. Read more

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said the force had been in contact with both clubs following reports of an alleged assault.

“While the players were leaving the pitch at 2:30pm, it was reported that a boy had been assaulted by one of the visiting team as they were leaving the pitch,” the spokesperson said.

“Investigations are ongoing and officers are currently working with Everton Football Club to review CCTV footage and are conducting extensive investigations with witnesses to determine whether there has been a crime.”

The defeat left United in seventh place in the Premier League standings and facing the possibility of losing qualification to the Champions League next season, as they are six points behind Tottenham Hotspur, who are fourth.
