Mercedes-Benz puts 5,600 workers on vacation in Brazil due to chips shortage

Sao Paulo, April 5 (BNA): Mercedes-Benz Group (MBGn.DE) said it will put more than 5,000 workers on mass leave at two factories in Brazil due to a shortage of semiconductor chips.

The production halt will occur from April 18 to May 3 and will involve 5,000 employees at the Sao Bernardo do Campo plant and 600 at the Juiz de Fora plant, located in the Brazilian states of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais, respectively.

Mercedes said it is adjusting its production of trucks, truck cabins, bus chassis and other auto parts due to the global semiconductor supply crisis, Reuters reported.

The company had already put about 1,200 workers on collective paid leave in March due to supply chain shortages, according to the union of metal workers from the São Bernardo do Campo region.
