Meloni takes charge as PM as Italy swings to the right

Rome, October 22 (BNA) – Georgia Meloni was chosen Friday as the first woman prime minister in Italy and chose her ministerial team, to put her stamp on the most right-wing government in the country since World War II.

Meloni, the leader of the Italian Brotherhood, won last month’s election by teaming up with Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia and Matteo Salvini’s league, Reuters reported.

Its government – Italy’s 68th since 1946 – will replace the National Unity Department led by former European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi, who attended an EU summit in Brussels on Friday in one of his last acts as prime minister.
