Eugene, July 24 (BNA): American Sidney McLaughlin broke her world record in the 400m hurdles to win her first individual world championship gold, while compatriot Michael Norman won the men’s 400m title and Bahamas Shauna Miller Uibo won the women’s race.

McLaughlin clocked his place in 50.68 seconds to set the first world record at this year’s tournament, finishing well ahead of silver medalist Vimk Paul of the Netherlands. Defending champion Dalila Mohamed came in third.

“The time is absolutely amazing and the sport is getting faster and faster,” said McLaughlin, who won the 4x400m relay gold in Doha.

Miller-Uibo reached the 400m gold in 49.11 seconds to win her first world title, adding to her 2016 and 2020 Olympic gold medal over the distance.

Dominican Republic Marilyde Paulino, silver medalist behind Miller Uibo in Tokyo, was forced to take second place again while Sada Williams of Barbados took bronze.

In the men’s event, Norman made up for a disappointing fifth place finish in Tokyo with a gold medal in Eugene, taking the win in 44.29 seconds to claim his first world title.

Former Olympic and world champion Kirani James of Grenada finished second, while Britain’s Matthew Hudson-Smith beat champion Alison to finish last on the podium.

Tokyo bronze medalist Kelsey Lee Barber joins 400m runner Kathy Freeman as the only Australian to retain a world athletics title after defending her title in the javelin with a world-leading 66.91m throw.
American winger Kara (64.05) and Japan’s Haruka Kitaguchi (63.27) grabbed silver and bronze in their throws in the last round.

The U.S. men’s relay quadruple made up of Christian Coleman, Noah Lyles, Elijah Hall and Marvin Brassey qualified for the 4×100m final in 37.87 seconds, and the U.S. women’s team had little trouble, finishing fastest in 41.56 seconds.

World champion Jamaica qualified without Sherika Jackson, Shelley Ann Fraser-Price and Elaine Thompson-Hera, who swept the 100m podium.

Alison Felix has postponed her retirement plans after being called into the 4x400m relay heats on Saturday, after bringing the curtain down on her glittering run last week.
Peruvian Kimberly Garcia Leon won the opening round of the women’s 35 km race with a time of 2:39:16, a week after claiming her first world gold in the 20 km.

Katarzyna Zdzeblu of Poland and China, Qiang Shigei, also mirrored their results from the 20-kilometre race walk by finishing second and third.
