Mbappe beats PSG all-time scoring record as French champions extend lead

Paris, March 5 (BNA): Kylian Mbappe became PSG’s all-time leading scorer when he helped his side extend their lead in Ligue 1 to 11 points in a 4-2 home win over Nantes in Ligue 1.

Reuters reports that the 24-year-old Mbappe found the net two minutes into stoppage time to score his 201st goal in all competitions for Paris Saint-Germain, improving on the mark he shared with Edinson Cavani.

The club organized a short celebration after the final whistle, during which a large picture of Mbappe was displayed in the Parc des Princes.

Mbappe said, “It is very special to be here. It was the last time I was here to announce that I would stay (to extend his contract), it is a great honor to be here as the club’s top scorer.”

“It is a great honor to be a player of Paris Saint-Germain, to play in this historic shirt of the biggest club in France.”

Paris Saint-Germain, who travels to Bayern Munich next week hoping to overturn a 1-0 deficit in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, was leading 2-0 after 17 minutes from Lionel Messi and Juan Hajam’s own goals, only for the Canary Islands. to equalize before half-time thanks to Ludovic Plas and Ignatius Ganago.

But Christophe Galtier’s side sealed all three points after a Danilo goal just after the hour mark and a late Mbappe goal gave them 63 points from 26 matches.

Second-placed Olympique de Marseille travel to Stade Rennes on Sunday.

PSG got off to a great start with Messi opening the scoring in the 12th minute with a left footed shot from a Fabian Ruiz cross.

Five minutes later, Nuno Mendes’ effort was saved by Alban Lafont into the path of Hajam who, under pressure from Nordi Mukele, fired the ball into his own net to give PSG a 2–0 advantage.

But in the 31st minute, Blass volleyed a superb shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma to reduce the arrears, seven minutes before Ganago’s corner kick was cleared past the Italian goalkeeper to level the score.

But 15 minutes into the second half, it was restored when Danilo headed in from Mbappe’s cross before the France striker scored his record goal with his left foot from inside the box.

It wasn’t a great evening for PSG as Mukele was substituted with a heel problem before centre-back Marquinhos returned to the dressing room in the 75th minute with what appeared to be a lower back problem.

Earlier, RC Linz’s Champions League hopes suffered another blow when they were held to a 1-1 home draw in the northern derby.

Although the result moved Lens up to third in the standings with 51 points, Frank Hayes’ side have now won just one of their last seven league matches and they have Monaco and Stade Rennes, who have a game in hand, five points behind them.

The home team had the upper hand in the first half and went ahead thanks to a Jose Fonte own goal, but Jonathan David equalized after the break before Brys Samba produced several fine strikes to save the equalizer at Stade Bolert-Delleles.
