Maradona’s medical personnel to face homicide trial

Buenos Aires, June 23 (BNA) An Argentine judge ruled, Wednesday, to try eight medical personnel involved in the care of soccer star Diego Maradona for criminal negligence.

The judge named brain surgeon Leopoldo Luc and psychiatrist Augustina Kozakov among those to be tried for the murder. The experiment is not expected to begin until the end of 2023 or early 2024, the Associated Press reports.

The defendants are accused of failing to take proper care of Maradona when he was recovering from the surgery that led to his death.

Maradona died at the age of 60 on November 25, 2020 of cardiac and respiratory arrest while recovering at a home outside Buenos Aires from surgery for a blood clot in his brain.

In April, prosecutors asked Judge Orlando Diaz to refer those under investigation to a public trial.

The autopsy of Maradona said that he died of natural causes, but the Argentine judiciary began investigating the case after pressure from the Maradona family. A medical committee said the performance of the staff who took care of the 1986 World Cup winner was not enough.
