Manchester United loses ground on Premier League’s top four

London, October 16 (BNA): Manchester United lost ground in the race for the top four in the Premier League after drawing 0-0 with Newcastle on Sunday.

With fourth-placed Chelsea winning 2-0 at Aston Villa, the London club moved three points clear of United in fifth, with Eric Ten Hag tied for the first time since taking charge at Old Trafford.

Substitute Marcus Rashford could have secured a late victory for the hosts but Newcastle held on to a point after the striker failed to convert Casemiro’s cross in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Newcastle looked dangerous in the first half, with Callum Wilson seeing an early disregard for a missed penalty before Jullinton hit the crossbar and sends his follow up to the post.

United improved in the second half and Cristiano Ronaldo saw two goals disqualified, according to the Associated Press.

Sean Longstaff’s challenge to Jadon Sancho was among a series of rejected penalty requests.

Ronaldo was given a plaque after scoring his 700th goal for the club last weekend, with David de Gea receiving a plaque to announce the fact that he made his 500th appearance for United on Sunday.

Newcastle could have celebrated a goal in the 24th minute when Kieran Trippier’s free kick hit the wall, but the right-back quickly responded by raising a cross to Joelinton, who headed to the crossbar.

De Gea was on the floor when he met Julinton with the recovery, only to head to the post.
