Man City, Inter Milan meet in Champions League final of contrasting club history

Man City and Inter Milan meet in the Champions League final from the club’s disparate history<br />

Istanbul, June 8 (BNA): Manchester City will enter the Champions League final tomorrow, Saturday, as a modern football player and financial weight compared to Inter Milan.

This is a new development in the European history of two clubs that have rarely operated at the same level, and the status of each of them, on and off the field, has been upended about 12 years ago, according to the Associated Press.

Inter had aristocratic traditions and titles while City were an English club from the Third Division when crosstown rivals Manchester United lifted the famous European trophy in 1999.

The entire Inter squad that started the semi-final second leg against AC Milan cost less than the total transfer fee of just one City player, the €117.5m ($126m) signing of Jack Grealish in the squad that Real Madrid disintegrated after one night.

It was very different for most of the 68 years of history that began as the European Cup and became the Champions League.

When Inter last won in 2010, the Nerazzurri were European champions more often than City played total matches in the competition: three titles for Inter and two for City.

Inter won two consecutive titles in 1964 and 1965 and reached two more finals in 1967 and 1972. They also won three UEFA Cup titles in the 1990s when Serie A was still the best and richest league in Europe.

Owned for most of this era by the Moratti family, billionaires in the oil industry, Inter also broke the world transfer fee record four times, including when they signed Brazilian striker Ronaldo from Barcelona.

City’s only European Cup adventure lasted for two weeks and ended in Istanbul in October 1968, eliminated by Fenerbahçe in the first round. He won the European Cup Winners’ Cup the following season, but the club had not had serious European prestige in decades.

Saturday’s game is the third Champions League final since April 2021 and all of the finalists since Man City, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Inter Milan have been members of the Premier League.
