Malaysia landslide death toll rises to 24, 9 more missing

Manama, Dec. 17 (BNA): Today, Saturday, rescuers found the bodies of a woman and two children, raising the death toll in the landslide in an unauthorized camp in Malaysia to 24, and nine others are still missing.

Selangor state fire chief Nourazam Khamis told reporters that the bodies of a mother and son were found buried under a meter (3 feet) of mud and debris, the Associated Press reported.

The body of a young girl was later discovered. He said there was hope of finding survivors if they clung to mounds, branches or rocks with pockets of air, but the chances were slim.

Authorities said 94 people were sleeping at the campsite on an organic farm early Friday when dirt from a road fell about 30 meters (100 feet) on top of them and covered about 1 hectare (3 acres). Most of them were families who were enjoying a short break during the end of the school year holidays.

Among the 24 victims were seven children and 13 women. The authorities were still conducting autopsies and waiting for next of kin to identify the victims.
