Magnitude 6.1 quake strikes off New Zealand coast

Wellington, Feb. 15 (BNA): A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand near Wellington on Wednesday at a depth of 48 km, government seismological watch Geonet said.

The epicenter was 50 km from Paraparaumu city.

Reuters reported that a witness felt a strong tremor that lasted for several seconds in the capital, Wellington.

New Zealand sits on the seismically active “Ring of Fire,” a 40,000-kilometer arc of volcanoes and ocean trenches that surrounds most of the Pacific Ocean.

It comes after Hurricane Gabriel caused massive damage across the North Island this week, killing 4 people, displacing more than 10,000 people and causing widespread damage.
