Madrid-Liverpool, PSG-Bayern in Champions League last-16

Nyon on November 7 (BUS): Real Madrid will play for Liverpool again. Bayern Munich will play Paris Saint-Germain again, according to the Associated Press. Two more Champions League final matches were played on Monday in the draw for the Round of 16 as some of Europe’s best heavyweight teams were paired together.

Real Madrid beat Liverpool in the 2018 and 2022 finals to raise their record in the competition to 14 titles, and Bayern beat Paris Saint-Germain in 2020 to become European champions for the sixth time.

The trend continued one hour later at UEFA headquarters with the first pairing made in the Europa League draw. Barcelona will face Manchester United, the team they beat in the 2009 and 2011 Champions League final, in the knockout stage of the second division competition in February.

For defending champions Madrid, hitting a difficult road to winning the title is nothing new. The Spanish side’s impressive run last season saw them beat Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool to lift the trophy.

Pairing PSG with Bayern means another big draw at this point for the French champions as well. Paris Saint-Germain’s quest to win its first European title in March ended with a stunning hat-trick from Karim Benzema in the second leg in Madrid.

A difficult draw was possible as PSG finished second behind Benfica in their group after the Portuguese side scored a crucial goal in stoppage time in last week’s 6-1 win over Maccabi Haifa.
