Madrid extends Modric’s contract, keeps midfield intact

Madrid, June 8 (BNA): Real Madrid extended Luka Modric’s contract for another year, today, Monday, while maintaining the midfield that helped the club win its 14th European title this season.

The 36-year-old Croatian has signed a new contract with the Spanish club until June 2023 and will return to play alongside Toni Kroos and Casemiro, the trio who helped Madrid win five Champions League titles in the past nine seasons.

Modric stood in front of 14 European titles won by Real Madrid, and carried the club’s shirt in his name and number 2023.

Modric will play his eleventh season with Real Madrid after joining from English club Tottenham in 2012, according to the Associated Press.

He helped Real Madrid win 20 titles, including five Champions Leagues and three Spanish Leagues.

Real Madrid are keeping Modric but are already looking to update their midfield, with Kroos at 32 and Casemiro at 30.

Last season, Real Madrid signed 19-year-old Eduardo Camavinga from Rennes, and is now on the verge of announcing an agreement with 22-year-old Aurelien Chuamini from Monaco.

Camavinga has played mostly this season, as has 23-year-old Federico Valverde, who has been with the first team since 2018.

Gareth Bale and Francisco Isco will not stay with the Spanish club next season, and Marco Asensio is also expected to leave.

To bolster its defense, Madrid recently signed former Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger on a free transfer deal.

He added former Bayern Munich midfielder David Alaba last season. Veteran left-back Marcelo will leave the club, and Madrid won the 35th Spanish League title, setting the record for this season.
