Liverpool beats 10-man Newcastle to boost EPL top-4 hopes

London, Feb 18 (BNA): Liverpool beat 10-man Newcastle United 2-0 and boosted their bid for fourth place in the English Premier League on Saturday.

The result ended Newcastle’s 17-game unbeaten streak in the league and handed Eddie Howe’s side just their second loss of the season – both against Liverpool, reports the Associated Press.

Liverpool were already rampant with two goals by the time Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope was sent off in the 22nd minute for a straight red card after handling the ball outside the area.

That made the rest of the game very much a matter of seeing things for the visitors, who cut the gap with fourth-placed Newcastle to six points and have a game in hand.

Darwin Nunez opened the scoring with an emphatic finish in the 10th minute after Trent Alexander-Arnold sent a ball over the Uruguay defense for the Uruguay striker who controlled it with the help of his chest before shooting past the Pope.

Mohamed Salah then picked Gakpo in the area with a chip seven minutes later and finished the Netherlands international clinically to double the lead. Jacobo, who joined from PSV Eindhoven in January, scored his first goal for Liverpool on Monday in a 2-0 win over Everton.
