Leverkusen stunned 2-1 by second-tier Karlsruhe in German Cup

Berlin, October 27 (BNA): Bayer Leverkusen suffered another setback on Wednesday when it was knocked out of the German Cup after losing 2-1 at home to second-division team Karlsruhe.

dpa international said the visitors had a dream starting with Lucas Quito’s entry in the fifth minute.

Leverkusen, the 1993 cup winner and last year’s finalist, tied for 54th when Jeremy Frimpong’s shot into the upper left corner.

But a howl after eight minutes from goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky gifted Karlsruhe for the second time when he played the ball to Choi Kyung Rok, who calmly slotted the ball into the net.

Iker Bravo almost scored another goal shortly after coming on as the youngest player in Leverkusen’s history, but the 16-year-old fired high with the opener.

It was a third bad day in a row for Leverkusen after conceding four goals in seven minutes in a 5-1 home defeat by champions Bayern Munich and then taking a 2-0 lead in a 2-2 derby draw with Cologne.

Elsewhere, VFL Bochum beat Augsburg 5-4 on penalties after squandering their 2-0 league lead with a 2-2 lead after 120 minutes. Goalkeeper Manuel Riemann, who took part in the penalty shootout, sent Bochum after Arne Mayer hit Augsburg’s fifth penalty kick over the bar.

Union Berlin came back from behind to win 3-1 at home to third-tier Waldhof Mannheim after goals in extra time scored by Taino Owenyi, Kevin Burns and St. Pauli Hamburg, and they also needed 120 minutes to win 3-2 against Dynamo Dresden.
