Berlin, September 17 (BNA): Former champion Bayer Leverkusen came from behind to defeat Ferencvaros 2-1 on Thursday to make a successful start to their collective campaign in the European League.
The Hungarian visitors, coached by Peter Stoeger who was in charge of Leverkusen’s neighbours, Cologne, drew first blood from Ryan Mamme’s eighth-minute scoring.
Leverkusen equalized with an Exequziel Palacios shot in the top corner in the 37th minute, and young Florian Wirtz netted the winner unmarked at the right corner just over 20 minutes ago on the left – with Jeremy Frimpong making both goals.
German Leverkusen, who won the second division title in 1988 under his previous name in the European Cup, are three points at the top of Group G with Real Betis of Spain, who recovered from two goals down to defeat Celtic 4-3.
