London, November 29 (BNA): Manchester United put their fears aside to frustrate the Premier League leaders Chelsea after their 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday as Jadon Sancho scored an away goal that Jorginho canceled from a penalty kick.
Chelsea, under pressure after wins both Manchester City and Liverpool earlier in the weekend, have been dominating a United squad that played their first Premier League game under interim manager Michael Carrick following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last weekend.
But the Blues were penalized for their failure to turn possession into goals five minutes into the second half when United netted a free kick from Chelsea and Jorginho – alone near the halfway line – mistook the high ball, allowing Sancho to overpower and overpower him. The result left Chelsea in the lead, one point behind Manchester City and two points behind Liverpool. United are eighth, 12 points behind Chelsea.
Carrick dropped Cristiano Ronaldo off the bench as he sought to thwart Chelsea with a style focused on defence, but brought on the Portuguese star in the second half.
The former United midfielder appears likely to step down shortly after the club announced that German coach Ralf Rangnick would take over as interim manager until the end of the season.
