Latvia holds Norway to goalless draw in World Cup qualifying

Oslo, November 13 (BNA): Latvia drew 0-0 with Norway in the World Cup qualifiers, giving the Netherlands a chance to win Group G if Louis van Gaal’s team beat Montenegro later on Saturday.

Southampton striker Mohamed El Younosi thought he had finally broken the stubborn Latvia defense with a late effort, but the VAR ruled the goal for offside.

Norway were playing without injured striker Erling Haaland at Oslo’s Olival Stadium, according to the Associated Press.

The Netherlands host Norway on Tuesday, but if the Netherlands beat Montenegro, they will have already sealed qualification for the 2022 World Cup before the match in Rotterdam.

It will be the first time the Dutch have participated in a World Cup final since they finished third at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil – also with Van Gaal as coach.

Turkey jumped Norway to second place on goal difference by beating Gibraltar 6-0 in Istanbul. Turkey plays Montenegro on Tuesday in Podgorica.

Kerim Akturkoğlu opened the scoring in the 11th minute, and Dervisoglu scored twice within four minutes to make it 3-0 in the first half. Demiral, Dorson and Mert Mulder completed the scoring after the end of the first half.

The second-placed team plays a 12-team play-off that includes the runners-up in the 10 groups as well as the group winners of the UEFA Nations League.
