Korean Air flight overruns Cebu runway, no injuries reported

SEOUL, Oct. 24 (BNA) – Korean Air Lines said Monday that its flight KE631 with 173 people on board swept the runway while landing at Cebu International Airport in the Philippines the day before, but no injuries were reported.


Korean Air has expressed its real regret that it has always prioritized safety in all of its operations, Yonhap News Agency reported.


“A thorough investigation will be conducted with the local aviation authorities and the Korean authorities to determine the cause of this event,” Korean Air President Woo Ki-hong said in a statement.


He said the company remains committed to fulfilling its promise of safe operations and will make every effort to take measures to prevent any recurrence.


Korean Air said that immediately after the accident, about 162 passengers were escorted to local hotels, some of whom wanted to return home without going through their planned travel in the Philippines.


It said the B777-300ER is being arranged as an alternative passenger flight.


“Cebu airport is expected to remain closed until 1 a.m. on Tuesday (Korean time),” a company spokeswoman said by phone.


The statement said the A330-300, carrying 162 passengers and 11 crew members, twice attempted to land in bad weather and in the third attempt it swept the runway at 11:07 p.m. on Sunday.


The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said it will set up an emergency response team to help deal with the accident in the Southeast Asian country.

Currently, Cebu Airport is temporarily closed due to a plane stop and other flights to Cebu are diverted to nearby airports or back to their original points.


The ministry said Korean budget airlines’ flights to Cebu were affected by the incident, as Jin Air’s flight from Incheon to Cebu was diverted to a nearby airport, and Jeju Air’s flight from Cebu to Incheon was delayed. in the current situation.


Air Busan said it has canceled a scheduled flight from Busan to Cebu due to the closure of Cebu Airport.
