Kenya’s Jeptum breaks women’s record at Paris marathon

Paris, April 3 (BNA) Kenya’s Judith Jepetum broke the Paris Marathon record while Ethiopia’s Deso Gilmissa won the men’s race on Sunday.

Jeptum finished the 42.2-kilometre (26.2 miles) race in 2 hours 19 minutes 48 seconds in cold conditions with a temperature of 2°C (36°F) at the start of the event.

The winner of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Marathon withdrew in the 28 km to set a personal best and break the 2:20:55 track record set by Kenya’s Purti Ryunoribo in 2017, according to the Associated Press.

Fanto Jima of Ethiopia was second, more than three minutes ahead of Jeptome. Her compatriot Biso Sado, a former 1,500m runner, completed the podium.

American runner Lindsey Flanagan, who finished seventh in the 2019 Chicago Marathon, finished 10th with a time of 2:26:54, a personal best.

In the men’s race, Gilmissa outperformed his compatriot and won the 2021 Chicago Marathon winner Sevo Tora to finish the race in 2:05:07.
