Washington, Oct. 21 / US: Kirill Kaprizov scored 3:02 in overtime to lead the Minnesota Wild to a 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday night for its first win of the season.
Kaprizov scored his fourth goal of the season and added assists as Minnesota concluded their four-game season opener with their first points of the season.
Mats Zuccarello added two goals and Sam Steele scored his second goal of the season. Marc-Andre Fleury finished 23 saves for Minnesota, according to the Associated Press.
Bo Horvat scored for the third game in a row, Dakota Joshua scored a goal and assist, and Nils Aman scored his first National Hockey League goal for Vancouver, dropping another lead. Thatcher Demko saved 33 balls for the Canucks.
Vancouver had a multi-goal lead in each of its first four games, losing each and only one point in an overtime loss to Columbus in their previous game. You let another advantage in the third period slip away.
While the Canucks have had trouble retaining the lead this season, Wild has had trouble getting ahead.
Zuccarello’s first goal in the game gave Minnesota their first lead of the new year 4:37 in the first period.
The lead lasted only 3:21 as Horvat scored his fourth goal of the season with a head kick, tapping in a pass from Tanner Pearson.
Drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the sixth round in 2020, Aman added the first game of his fifth career. Joshua Aman sent alone on Fleury with a behind-the-back pass and Aman beat Fleury with a shot to the wrist.
A team with Stanley Cup ambitions after last season’s franchise—53 wins and 113 points, Wild suffered defensive lapses during their disappointing start. Thursday’s game started the same way, but Minnesota recovered.
Florey, the 37-year-old goalkeeper who re-signed with Minnesota on a two-year off-season deal, allowed 14 goals in 75 shots and was withdrawn in his previous start. He’s been at his best since the second half, allowing one goal in the last 18 shots he’s faced.
Wilde, who scored 31-7-2 at home last season, had allowed 20 goals in the first three games of his home opening.
