Jordan: Army captain killed, three soldiers injured by smugglers on borders with Syria

Amman, Jan. 16 (BNA) A border guard captain was killed and three soldiers were wounded at dawn today, Sunday, when they clashed with a group of smugglers on the northeastern border of Jordan.

A statement by the Jordanian army – the Arab Army, said that smugglers opened fire on a border guard patrol on the northeastern border at dawn on Sunday, before the forces returned fire and pushed the smugglers into Syrian territory.

The Jordan News Agency (Petra) said that the accident resulted in the killing of Captain Muhammad Khudeirat and the injury of three other soldiers, who were taken to a nearby military hospital.

The army said that a search of the area where the accident took place found drugs left behind by smugglers.

The army reiterated that it will not tolerate any smuggling or infiltration attempts targeting national security. The army offered its condolences and sympathy to the captain’s family, and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
