James Cleverly appointed new UK foreign secretary

London, September 7 (BNA) New British Prime Minister Liz Truss has appointed James Cleverly as Foreign Secretary, her office said in a statement today, Tuesday.

He has worked smartly as education minister since July, when Boris Johnson announced he would resign and appointed a transitional government until a new leader was appointed, Reuters reported.

The smart, 53-year-old has risen rapidly through the Conservative ranks since he was first elected as a Member of Parliament for the English city of Braintree in 2015.

He also worked in the Foreign Office as Secretary of State, often providing Parliamentary updates on Britain’s support for Ukraine.

As Secretary of State, Truss has established herself as a critic of China as well as Russia, and Cleverly indicated that her government would take a tough line with both Moscow and Beijing.

Like Truss, Cleverly remained loyal to Johnson and was an early supporter of Truss’ campaign to replace him as leader.

He cleverly made his own bid to be leader in 2019, when former Prime Minister Theresa May stepped down, but she was the first candidate to drop out of the race.
