James agrees two-year, $97 million extension with Lakers

Los Angeles, Aug. 18 (BNA) Los Angeles Lakers striker LeBron James has agreed to extend his contract with the team for two years, worth $97.1 million.

His agent, Rich Paul, said the contract includes an option to extend for another year until the 2024-25 season.

James, who was entering the final season of his current $44.5 million deal, turns 38 in December and is therefore limited to signing a two-year extension because he will be 38 or older when the deal expires, according to Reuters.

The extension would make the four-time NBA champion and MVP the highest-earning player in NBA history with $532 million in guaranteed money over his career, surpassing Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant.

In February, James dismissed speculation that he was looking to move from the underperforming Lakers, saying he intended to stay with the team as long as he could play.

The Lakers missed the playoffs in 2022, though James averaged 30.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 6.2 assists. Injuries were limited to 56 matches.
