Isak penalty secures 1-1 draw for Newcastle against Bournemouth

Newcastle, September 18 (BNA): Striker Alexander Isaacs equalized from a penalty kick to give Newcastle United a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth in the English Premier League football match on Saturday at St James’ Park.

After dominating a first half that saw Kieran Trippier shaved off the post with a free kick, Newcastle must have gone into the break wondering what they should do to score after thwarting a string of chances, Reuters reports.
Joelinton came even closer, firing inside the post with an arched shot, then he and Ryan Fraser were saved by goalkeeper Neto, who made two great saves shortly before the break.

Using a tight five-man streak across the back, the Bournemouth defense came out in the second half determined to close the spaces that led to those chances, and their tactic worked great.

Things then went from bad to worse for the hosts when Philip Billing scored a goal for Bournemouth in the 62nd minute, delivering a clever left-footed shot to briefly silence the home side’s fans.

However, this progress was short-lived as Jefferson Lerma was penalized after a VAR review to tackle Trippier’s cross in the penalty area, and Isaacs stepped up to take the penalty kick past Neto.

It was Isak’s first home goal for Newcastle since he joined from Real Sociedad in August for 59 million pounds ($67 million).

Newcastle’s lack of penetration proved costly as they struggled to create despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession, with Jolinton’s poor header in injury time coming close to threatening Neto’s target once again.

Bournemouth moved up two places from 14th to 12th with eight points, while Newcastle’s fifth draw in seven league matches lifted the Magpies to 10th in the table, also with eight points, with their fans booed at the final whistle.

“I thought today we’d back off,” said Eddie Howe, beIN Sports technical director. “I thought it was far from our high, and if we got anywhere near our high, we would have won today.

“From the beginning, we didn’t have that momentum and feel for us as we have at times this season,” he added.
Bournemouth interim manager Gary O’Neill told the BBC he expects to know his future next week after a good result at Newcastle.

“I’m glad the boys got something out of it because they were put into a rosy hell,” he said.
