Indonesia lifts remaining COVID restrictions

Jakarta, Dec. 30 (BNA): Indonesia’s President, Joko Widodo, said Friday that Indonesia has canceled all remaining measures to control the spread of COVID-19 effective immediately, as most of the country’s population already has antibodies against the disease.

“There will be no more restrictions on gatherings and movements,” the president said in a press conference, noting that the decision was taken based on the latest infection figures.

Prior to the announcement, most movement restrictions had already been removed for at least one booster vaccine recipient, but authorities still required that masks be worn indoors and that a COVID-tracking app be used when entering most public spaces.

President Joko urged Indonesians to be vigilant about the virus, including continuing to wear masks indoors and when in crowds, according to Reuters.

At one time, Indonesia had the highest infection rate in Asia, but daily cases have fallen below 1,000 on most days in the past week, with hospitalizations and deaths relatively low.

The world’s fourth most populous country has recorded more than 6.7 million cases overall, with 160,583 deaths.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, nearly 75% of Indonesians over 6 years of age, or 174.7 million people, have received two vaccine injections, and about 68.5 million have received at least one booster injection.
