Indian court sentences 38 to death for fatal 2008 bombings

New Delhi, Feb. 18 (BNA): An Indian court on Friday sentenced 38 people to death in a series of bombings in 2008 that left more than 50 people dead and 200 injured in Ahmedabad, Gujarat state.

It was the first time so many defendants received death sentences in a single case in India, according to the Associated Press.

The judgment must be confirmed by a higher court. As judge A. R Patel sentenced 11 people to life imprisonment in the case in which more than 12 bombs exploded in several parts of Ahmedabad.

The attacks took place in two waves with explosive devices hidden in lunch boxes and bicycles.

The first explosion occurred near crowded and crowded shopping malls in Ahmedabad, and the second explosion occurred about 20 minutes later in and around hospitals where victims were taken.

The trial concluded in September.
